Canada buried 23 UNEF fatal casualties in the Gaza War Cemetery.

Cemetery: Gaza War Cemetery

Location: Gaza City, Gaza Strip. The war cemetery is 1.5 kilometres north-east of the city near the Bureir Road and 370 metres from the railway station.

Cemetery History: The Book of Genesis Verse 10:19 indicates that the city of Gaza was established about 5,000 years ago by the Canaanites. Gaza City is located on an ancient caravan route that paralleled the Mediterranean Sea from Phoenicia to Egypt. Gaza was later taken over by the Philistines and Alexander the Great, and then the Crusaders who held the city until the Ottoman Empire conquered that part of the world. During World War 1, the British conquered the area and located the Gaza War Cemetery adjacent to the city to inter their war dead continuing to World War 2 after which it became a Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery. Canada buried 23 UNEF fatal casualties in the Gaza War Cemetery.
